wrap up winning fall season with 2nd place at Del Walker

(Long
Beach, CA 11/7/03) The UTSA golf team finished the fall
season with a record of two wins, two seconds and a fifth,
as they placed second by only two strokes with a 2-over-par
score of 868, against a strong national field in the Del
Walker Collegiate today, beating the likes of Houston, Arizona,
Oregon State and Lamar. They lost to UC Riverside (866)
by a narrow two strokes.

UTSA entered the final 18
two strokes behind second-round leader Long Beach State.
The host team faded to a tie for seventh place after turning
in a 300, while the Roadrunners finished with a one-over-par
285 to erase that deficit today. However, UC Riverside,
three shots back of UTSA entering today, posted a four-under
280 to finish at three-over 855 (291-294-280) for the tournament
and two shots ahead of UTSA's 857 (284-288-285).
Senior Mike Mezei (Lethbridge,
Alberta, Canada) and junior Michael Schaeffer (New Braunfels,
Texas) led the UTSA charge, tying for fifth place in the
individual standings at three-under-par 210. Mezei shot
even-par 71 on Friday after rounds of 67 and 72 on Thursday,
while Schaeffer was one-under today after posting rounds
of 72 and 68, including a hole-in-one on No. 10, on the
first day.
Freshman Matt Johnston (Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada) carded a final-round, three-under 68 to
end up tied for 15th at four-over 217 (76-72-69), while
sophomore John Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 31st
at seven-over 220 (69-76-75). Freshman Tim Martin (Mandeville,
La.) tied for 63rd at 15-over 228 (76-77-75).
Lamar's Chris Stroud won
individual medalist honors at 11-under 202 (66-65-71), while
the Cardinals finished third in the team race at 10-over
862 (295-281-286).

The event features a 12-team field: UTSA (ranked 43rd in
latest Golf Week poll), Oregon State (52), Arizona (47),
North Texas (65), Lamar (71), Long Beach State (79), Cal
Poly (92), CS Northridge (93), Houston (96), San Jose State
(97), UC Riverside (100), Pacific (110), and UC Santa Barbara
(129).
