Johnston leads UTSA to sixth-place at Adams Cup of Newport
     
NEWPORT, R.I.9/27/2005 - Junior Matt Johnston (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) fired an even-par 72 to help lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Adams Cup of Newport held Tuesday at Newport National Golf Club’s Orchard Course (7,244 yards/par 72).     
      The Roadrunners overcame an opening-round 323, which left them in a tie for 15th out of 16 teams, with a 306 over

the final 18 holes on Monday, putting them in 10th entering today’s round. Johnston’s 72 keyed a 12-over 300 carded by UTSA, the fifth-best round of the day, propelling the Roadrunners into sixth place in the final standings at 929, only two strokes behind South Florida for fifth. Texas A&M won the team title with a 306-297-292=895, followed by North Carolina (900), South Carolina-Aiken (907) and Rhode Island (918).
     Johnston finished in a tie for fifth in the individual standings at 77-76-72=225. Martin Ureta of North Carolina was the individual medalist at 71-76-69=216. Sophomore transfer Thomas Kearney tied for 23rd with a 54-hole total of 232, while sophomores Shane Costelloe and Nick Olivarri tied for 45th (238) and 54th (240), respectively. Senior John Elizondo tied for 59th (241).
     The Roadrunners return to the course on Oct. 10-11 when they travel to Waco for the Baylor Invitational. See results: Team Stats Players Combo Media
