(WINNIPEG, Man) Mike Mezei wasn’t about to work overtime for his first Canadian Tour triumph Sunday at the Free Press Manitoba Classic. Winnepeg is also Matt Johnston's home town.
With fellow Canadian Derek Gillespie already in the house hoping for a playoff, Mezei birdied the 17th hole en route to a final-round-3-under 68 and end a dramatic afternoon in the Manitoba capital.
Mezei finished with a four-day total of 13-under 271, one shot better than Gillespie, who made a final-day charge with a 65.
Mezei became the fourth different Canadian, and third from Alberta, to win in 2007, the first time that has happened since 1996 when six Canucks found the top podium.

(Yankton, SD 8/1/07) Jeremy Hoeck of the Yankton Daily reports that John Elizondo was one of 22 pros in attendance for Tuesday's Hillcrest Ladies Invitational Pro-Am in Yankton, SD. John provided advice to the three amateurs in his group one which he said was "very talented."

"They had some really great shots out there," Elizondo said. "I tried to help them when they asked for some advice; especially around the greens. It was fun helping them read the greens. And once I did that, they were knocking them in like crazy."
As Elizondo said, Tuesday's event was simply practice for this weekend's Hillcrest Pro-Am.
John is traveling on the Dakota's Pro Tour where he has one win and a second place in eight events so far this year. John shot 67-68-69=204 at the 16TH annueal Western Printing Pro-Am tour event at Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen, South Dakota, July 20-22 for his seconed place finish.
John ws playing the Hillcrest Invitational event to warm up for this week's tour event.
"It was nice to play and be relaxed," the San Antonio, Tex. native said. "There was pretty much no pressure at all. This was basically my practice round."
Carl Schlingman, one of the three amateurs in Elizondo's group, also had great things to say about both the event and the pros in the groups.
"That's why I love playing in this thing; just how nice the pros are," Schlingman said. "I've always had good pros; they've always been so helpful. John was even more helpful to us, especially with our putting."
The quartet of Elizondo, Schlingman, Kathy Thranum and Kristi Peterka finished with a score of 139
