Matt Johnston qualifies to play in two nations' amateur tourneys
Matt Johnston has qualified to play in the both the Canadian Amateur and the United States Amateur golf tournaments.
"Quite an unbelievable feat...rarely accomplished," said Coach Chris Donielson. "Matt has been to the US Amateur one time before and it will be fun to watch for our UTSA golf bag on TV as Matt represents us proudly."

The US Amateur is being played August 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.  The highest score qualifying for the tournament was a 154 total at Trump National in New York. Matt scored 139 at Hillcrest Golf Club in St. Paul.
Shane Costello 2nd in Guardian General Tobago Open Golf Tournament
(Sunday, June 5, 2005 - Tobego) Top national junior Simon Merry defeated Shane Costello for the Championship title of the Guardian General Tobago Open that finished at the Tobago Plantations Beach and Golf Resort in Lowlands last weekend. Merry fired a steady even-par 72 on the final day of the three-day, 54-hole tournament to total three-under 213 after his previous rounds of 72 and 69. Fellow national junior Shane Costelloe was second with a (71+72+73=217).

Local Roadrunner roommates do well in Greater San Antonio Men's Amateur Championship
(San Antonio 6/27/2005) Nick Olivarri, buoyed by a corps of friends and family at the Greater San Antonio Amateur, had threaded home a difficult 25-foot bogey putt to secure a tie for second with military champion Jonathan Mathias.
Olivarri, two strokes behind Mathias heading to the 16th tee box, drove that par-4 green from 336 yards away en route to a key birdie, then took advantage of Mathias' putting woes on the final two greens to gain a share of the runner-up slot at 3-over 287.
A disappointed Mathias, who two-putted on both surfaces from inside five feet to finish at 3-over 74 for the day, left without comment afterward.
"Hey, I've been there," said Olivarri, whose round of 72 included a nifty salvage job on the par-4 18th, when he knocked his drive and approach into bunkers on the right side of the fairway before rallying. "That's golf."

Nick Olivarri

John Elizondo

Olivarri's college roommate, John Elizondo, recorded the day's only sub-par round with a 1-under 70, one of only nine red numbers recorded in the 288 rounds played by 72 players in the championship flight.

"Coming into this week, Alan and I were talking, and we thought that 1-, 2-, maybe 3-under would get you in it," said Olivarri, who kept loose all week with the help of a bright yellow SpongeBob Squarepants club cover on his bag. "That's how unbelievable he played."  See Article for details.

UTSA Golfer Kitt Thabungkan safe in Thailand after disaster
(Bangkok, Thailand 12/29/2004) Coach Chris Donielson has received confirmation from Kitt Thabungkan in Thailand that the family is safe.
"I just received news from Kitt's father in Thailand. ...Kitt and his family are safe amid the horrific damage from the earthquake/tsunami. We're all relieved to hear this news," writes Coach Chris.
"In watching the situation the past couple of days and while reading the articles in the news,

Kitt Thanbungkan
I was made aware of how close the situation was for them. Kitt and his family had travel plans to the city called Phuket that was heavily damaged. The article is included below. Enjoy a safe holiday and cherish the time given to each of us.'
Coach provided the following article about the disaster.

Celebrities Among Victims of Tsunamis
Supermodel, Ski Champion Survive Deadly Waves
By ROB KENNEDY, AP
BANGKOK, Thailand (Dec. 28) - A German statesman, a Czech supermodel and a Swedish Olympic ski champion were among the vacationers whose search for peace and sun in tropical southern Asia was shattered by the tsunamis that spared neither rich nor poor.
Petra Nemcova - who appeared on the cover of 2003 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue - was carried away with her boyfriend, the fashion photographer Simon Atlee, after a huge wave plowed into southern Thailand on Sunday.
Nemcova's New York spokesman, Rob Shuter, said the model and her boyfriend had been vacationing in the resort of Phuket when waves overwhelmed their beach hut.
Nemcova, 25, clung to a tree for eight hours as the water swirled around her. She was recovering in a Thai hospital from broken bones, possibly including a broken pelvis, and unspecified internal injuries.
Atlee, 33, was swallowed by the raging waters and was still missing Tuesday.
"I've spoken to Petra several times and she's in pretty bad shape," Shuter said. "She's on pain medication. She probably doesn't realize yet the magnitude of the disaster."
Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was on holiday in Sri Lanka's pristine south - one of the areas most devastated by tsunamis.
